“Senior Attorney” means an Attorney who has been a member in good standing of the Bar of the Supreme Court in any state or the District of Columbia for 40 or more years. If you are seeking Senior Attorney status you have the burden of verifying such status to the satisfaction of the Commission.
Senior Attorneys only need twelve CLE credit hours during each two-year period. At least six of the credits must be in person, live credits. In addition, during the two-year period, at least two of the twelve credits must be Ethics credits. Up to ten excess credits may be carried over to the next compliance period. Ethics credits may not be carried forward as Ethics credits, but may be carried forward as general credits.
An Attorney who moves to inactive status under Supreme Court Rule 69(d)(i) is exempt from CLE requirements. If an Attorney resumes Active status their CLE requirement resumes on a pro-rated basis. The Attorney’s compliance year does not change. If the Attorney was inactive for ten or more years, they must complete the Fundamentals of Lawyer-Client Relations as part of their next compliance requirement.
Emeritus and Retired Attorneys have no obligation to fulfill any CLE requirements.
