About the Superior Court

What We Do & Who We Are

The Superior Court has statewide original jurisdiction over criminal and civil cases, except for equity cases and domestic relations matters.

The Court has exclusive jurisdiction over felonies and drug offenses (except most felonies and drug offenses involving minors, and except possession of marijuana cases).

The Court serves as an intermediate appellate court, hearing appeals on the record from the Court of Common Pleas, Family Court (adult criminal), and more than 50 administrative agencies.

The Superior Court, which celebrated its 185th Anniversary in 2017 has courthouses located in three counties, New Castle, Kent and Sussex.

The Leonard L. Williams Justice Center renamed in 2016 (formerly the New Castle County Courthouse) is located in Wilmington.

The Kent County Courthouse is located in Dover, our state capital. The new addition to the Kent County Courthouse opened officially on June 14, 2011.

The Sussex County Courthouse is located in Georgetown. The historic Sussex County Courthouse was renovated in 2006.

Each courthouse employs state-of-the-art courtroom technologies, including efiling and docketing, digital audio recording, Realtime transcription, wireless access, electronic evidence presentation systems as well as an integrated statewide case management system with an automated sentencing order program.
