Veterans Treatment Court

Mentor Program

The Delaware Veterans Treatment Court Mentor Program is a key component of the veterans court. They are part of the strong support team involved in the program. The volunteer mentor coordinator assigns a mentor to each of our veterans participating in the court.

Mentors serve an important resource for the veterans in an 'as-needed' support role; they do not replace counselors. The mentors utilize their military experience to relate to, empathize with, and encourage the individual to help facilitate the goal of a successful recovery and graduation of the veteran from the criminal justice system. The Veterans Court's presiding judge, Resident Judge Witham, himself a veteran, believes that the mentors "are a crucial part of the process."

The Duties and Responsibilities of Volunteer Mentor:

  • Must be a veteran of the U.S. Military
  • Adhere to Delaware Veterans Court Program policies and procedures
  • Be familiar with Veterans Affairs services and Veterans community resources
  • Serve as an advocate and role model for a veteran in the Veterans Court Program
  • Attend training and court sessions, if and when needed
  • Interact respectfully and professionally with other veterans and staff
  • Mentor agrees to serve for a period of one year or more
