Commissioner Mark S. Vavala
The Honorable Mark S. Vavala became a Commissioner
for Superior Court on June 30, 2001.
Commissioner Vavala received his B.A. from the University of Pennsylvania
in 1984 and his J.D. degree with honors from Widener
University School of Law in 1997. He was admitted to the Pennsylvania
Bar in May, 1997 (retired 2010) and the Delaware Bar in December, 1997.
From 1987 to the present, Commissioner Vavala has been an employee of
the Superior Court, holding positions from court clerk to jury manager,
to Chief Deputy Prothonotary, Technology Director, and as Master for Superior
Court from 1998 to 2001. He is active with the ADR program for the court.
Aside from various commissioner's duties, he works in the Drug Diversion
Court, performs mediations, and handles numerous other civil and criminal matters.
Commissioner Vavala was founding member and Chairman of the Delaware State
Bar Association Section on Alternate Dispute Resolution, and member of
the Delaware State Bar Association's Executive Committee. He has served
as the Managing Chair of the Delaware
Federation for Dispute Resolution, a nonprofit
corporation, dedicated to furthering the use of alternatives to litigation.
He also has served as a member of the News-Journal Editorial Review Board. In 2011, Commissioner Vavala received the Governor’s Team Excellence Award as part of the Superior Court Mental Health Court team.
Commissioner Vavala's current term ends January 26, 2018.
