JUSTICE OF THE PEACE COURT TRUANCY

2007-2008 Truancy Court Annual Report: View in PowerPoint or PDF format.

Truancy Court Recognized as IATDP's 2003 Program of the Year

2003 represented a "banner" year for the Justice of the Peace Court's Truancy Court - both in workload increases and in achievement. The Truancy Court experienced a 29% increase in case filings from 2002 and a 48% increase in court events. The 951 cases filed in the 2003 school year resulted in an astonishing 5114 case events (filings, arraignments, case reviews and dispositions). The Truancy Court is making a difference: 55% of the 739 students with cases closed in 2003 achieved overall compliance with the Truancy Court; 94% of the students achieving full compliance remained in school at the end of the year; 70% of all 2003 students involved with the Truancy Court were still in school at the end of the year; and 66% of all 2002 students involved with the Truancy Court continued to remain in school more than a year later. The Truancy Court was honored recently in its selection as the "2003 Program of the Year" by the International Association for Truancy and Dropout Prevention. The Truancy Court received the award because of its comprehensive approach to reducing truancy - it combines community health and social service resources with intensive court oversight to strengthen families, improve school attendance, and prevent juvenile delinquency.
